The Energy of Summer

Lazy days of summer? Maybe not. We often think of summer as a time to rest, relax, and vacation. These are not bad ways to spend the gifted days of a blessed season.

However, this time of year when the sun is shining brightly just might be the best time to be productive and make plans for the year ahead.

We know that exposure to sunlight provides the benefit of vitamin D absorption which is key to strong bones and a healthy immune system. However, a recent study conducted by the Cleveland Clinic also found that some of the top symptoms of vitamin D deficiency in adults are fatigue, muscle weakness and low mood, all of which can make us feel down and exhausted. This could mean that increased vitamin D exposure leads to more energy, strength and improved mood.

A double-blind trial in the Medicine journal compared the results of two groups who experienced fatigue and vitamin D deficiency. One group was given vitamin D supplements, while the other was given a placebo. Researchers found that the group given vitamin D experienced significant improvements in energy levels in just four weeks.

What does this mean for you and me this summer? Perhaps we take advantage of sun-filled days and use our extra energy to plan for September through May. We know how difficult it is to create a vision board in January when it’s cold and grey. We might be more inspired when the sun is filling us with vitamin D.

Enjoy the energy of summer!
