If you wear prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses, you know what difference a needed change in prescription can make. Clearer vision. Less fatigue in your eyes. Fewer headaches. And with new contact lenses, less dry eye and irritation. New lenses make a huge difference!

New lenses can be compared to a shift in perspective. A shift in perspective is priceless when we are in relationships with other people, no matter if it’s a personal relationship or a professional relationship. If we are able to put ourselves in another person’s place, we gain insight that invites us to grow. For example, if we are a parent and can see the world through the eyes of our child, we usually gain imagination, energy, and eagerness that otherwise we may not discover.

In the workplace, if we are able to put on the perspective of our supervisor, we will hopefully gain insight into the vision and values of the organization which drive decision making. As a team member, we can gain the perspective of one who strives to fulfill that vision and values each day through the tasks assigned. Putting on the lens of another can significantly assist us in shifting our perspective.

Think about the different roles you play in your own life and the lenses you wear for each. As partner, community member, parent, co-worker, volunteer, advocate, and caregiver. The lenses through which you view the wider world shift with your roles. May they each be carefully crafted with skill and passion to meet the needs of those around you.
