In the Stillness

The push to move forward seems to be ongoing. Ceaselessly, we are urged to achieve goals and set new ones. Being busy is celebrated. Day planners keep us on task by the hour to be sure we are productive.
Is this always helpful? Is this the only “successful” way to exist? Can we have rest and renewal and still have progress? How do we incorporate stillness of self into our day as something just as vital as a work meeting?
In the silence, we find ourselves with only the voice in our head and, if it is your belief system, that of God. This can be scary. Our first instinct may be to run. We may revolt and try to fill the silence, the stillness, with noise and activity to avoid the internal wrestling. We turn on music, text a friend, scroll through social media, check our email…. Anything, anything but the wrestling.
However, when we sit long enough, the wrestling subsides, and peace is found. We discover peace with ourselves, peace with our relationships, peace with our life situations. And if we do not discover peace, at least we discover a direction to find our way to peace.
So today, put it on your calendar… time for stillness.
