Fiery Love

“Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death, passion fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a raging flame.”—Song of Songs 8:6 NRSVUE
I recently got a tattoo. I know. I’m too old. It’s not becoming, etc., etc., etc. It is a piece of Hebrew calligraphy which symbolizes the above bible verse. It is a visible reminder that the love of God is strong and mighty and fierce and will conquer all. I needed a visible reminder that the love of God is up for the battle. Maybe none of this sounds grace-filled to my fellow Lutherans, but the haze that hovers so often these days is gloomy and grey. Too often, it feels like that grey haze is winning. Maybe I’m not reading my bible enough, or praying enough, or hanging out with enough godly people, but sometimes the ugliness of this world weighs heavy on me, and I wonder if God is really winning.
This tattoo is a daily visual that flames of Love Incarnate extinguish the dark. Love goes into the battle and wins. Eventually. Always. Guaranteed.
Light a flame and know that God’s love is fierce. It’s not backing down.
Keep Going.
