Everlasting Effects

Recently, I was mulching a few flower beds in our yard. It didn’t seem to be too much work for a lovely Sunday afternoon. I was actually enjoying it very much. Getting the flower beds ready for the summer is always one of my favorite things to do. The smell of the earth, my hands in the dirt, and the good sweat I was working up all felt wonderful.
Until the next few days. My back ached so much it hurt to sneeze! Truth is my back isn’t in the best shape, but really, this wasn’t a huge job. I considered getting a massage, but then I realized I really didn’t want anyone to touch me. Ice and ibuprofen were my best friends. Oh, the lasting effects of physical effort!
It’s not just physical effort that has lasting effects on us. Relationships that throw us for a zinger wear us out emotionally and mentally. Projects for work tax our energy, test our patience, and drain our creativity. Too many sleepless nights spent worrying about (fill in the blank) leave us weary and worn, unable to think clearly and be productive.
But there’s a flip side, a blessed side. The constant, endless supply of goodness and grace that comes from Above also has a drastic effect on us. Scripture tells us that God’s mercies are new every morning. Every. Single. Morning.
While the challenges of life indeed leave their lasting impression on us, far greater are the grace and mercy and goodness of the One who loves us. May that have an everlasting effect on you!
